Officials of the Russian Federal Agency for Fisheries said at a meeting of the “Azov-Black Sea Basin Scientific and Fishing Council” that in 2021 in the Black and Azov Seas, industrial production and processing of jellyfish could begin. It is on jellyfish, “adversely affecting the food base of commercial fish”, that the Russians blame for the decrease in their fish catch in the Sea of Azov in 2019 by 28.6%, to 10.3 thousand tons. However, at the same time, the Federal Agency for Fishery announced the connection between the reduction in catches and changes in the ecosystem of the Sea of Azov, including due to the alleged “increase in salinity”.
It is worth noting that full-fledged studies of the Sea of Azov, including under the activities of the notorious and corrupt Ukrainian-Russian Fisheries Commission, have long become a fiction and a cover for industrial poaching of valuable fish species and embezzlement of budget funds. Also, under the guise of “scientific research”, the Russian Federation has the opportunity to conduct reconnaissance and sabotage activities near the mainland coast of Ukraine. Therefore, it is very difficult to talk about the actual state of the ecosystems of the Sea of Azov.
The salinity of this basin is primarily affected by the dynamics of water exchange in the Kerch Strait, disfigured by the “Crimean Bridge”, as well as the flow of the Russian rivers Don and Kuban (up to 30 cubic kilometers per year). At the same time, the waters of the Kuban are almost completely disassembled for irrigation, and the flow of the Don is also decreasing, so the hydrology of the strait since 2018 has actually become a large-scale experiment with an unknown result. However, in addition to salinity, the situation with plankton (and, accordingly, with fish and jellyfish) is significantly affected by the ice situation on Azov, because the decrease of the ice on the sea gives more light for seabed in winter and so makes the growth of microorganisms stronger. Naturally, the Federal Agency for Fishery did not raise this issue and the impact of the “Crimean Bridge” on the ice movement of Azov.
However, for the Russians, the “culprits” in the form of jellyfish have already been found, it remains to catch and eat them …
