According to the “Black Sea Strategic Research Institute”, in April 2022, Russia exported by sea from the ports of the Azov and Black Seas at least 10.9 million tons of oil and oil products, including 8.5 million tons of crude oil. The cost of this oil is estimated by experts at approximately $7.4 billion.

At the same time, Russia is exporting grain stolen in Ukraine through the straits; for example, on May 22, the ship “Matros Pozynich”, IMO number 9573816, carrying grain from the occupied Sevastopol, passed the Bosphorus.

Possession of the Black Sea straits is a long-standing dream of Russia, since the Bosporus and the Dardanelles gave the empire the key to Europe, opened up the possibility of dominating the most important sea lanes.

The fact that Russia is seeking to “change the status” of the Black and Azov Seas is evidenced by statements by high-ranking Russian officials and Crimean collaborators. At the moment, the Russian army is not abandoning criminal attempts to seize the coastal regions of Ukraine in order to completely deprive it of access to the Azov and Black Seas.

Earlier, Turkey, relying on the Montreux Convention, closed the Black Sea straits for the passage of Russian warships, which objectively affected the course of hostilities in Ukraine.

For Russia, the criminal deprivation of Ukraine’s access to the sea would not only “solve the issue” of dominance in the region, since the next step would be an attempt to seize the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles in order to fully control the Black Sea and prevent further blockade of Russian military and cargo ships.

For example, European countries are now discussing further forms of an embargo on the export of oil products to Russia, and the world community is reacting to Russia’s looting of grain in the occupied territories.

Another important point is that today the Russia’s media are actively disseminating information that the United States allegedly plans to convince Turkey to open a passage to the Black Sea for NATO ships.

For Russia, this is “unacceptable”, therefore, as the Kremlin is sure, the faster the aggressor controls the Bosporus and the Dardanelles, the faster it will change the world order, which is what the Russian invaders dream of.
