The Association of Reintegration of Crimea sent to the UN Independent Expert on Protection against Violence and Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, Mr. Victor Madrigal-Borlos, information on relevant human rights’ restrictions in Crimea, in framework of the preparation of the relevant report to the UN Human Rights Council. The Association drew the UN Independent Expert’s attention to the illegal, contrary to the Geneva Conventions, Russian legislation’s application in the Crimea, aimed at discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, as well as on the “Crimean leader’s” constant public hate speech, based on relevant grounds.

However, taking into account the relevant “Crimean elite’s” examples, it should be noted that a particularly high level of such hate speech among key collaborators in Crimea often depends on the appropriate sexual orientation of these individuals, and it becomes a form of their “justification” in a homophobic environment. The Association also informed UN Expert about the transformation of Simeiz resort village, known until 2014 for its particularly tolerant attitude towards vacationers, regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity, to the Russian President’ press officer Dmitry Peskov’s personal manor in the occupied Crimea, and on the relevant gradual destruction of this resort.

The Association received UN Independent Expert’s thanks already for the materials collected and confirmed by evidences on the relevant occupiers’ and collaborators’ actions, which will be reflected in the UN profile report’s preparation.
